The Many Lives (or something) of Lisa Mantchev

I have yet to meet Lisa Mantchev, but that hasn't stopped me from noticing that her image quite frequently adorns the covers of old magazines published many more years ago than she has had (or claims to have had) birthdays.  Occasionally she is depicted at some innocuous activity, such as washing her hair, but usually she is having distinctly unladylike adventures -- consorting with pirates or demons, for example, or hacking apart a monster with her battle axe, or working as a cigarette girl.  Clearly there is more to Ms. Mantchev than meets the eye, though it must be admitted that on a few of these covers quite a bit meets the eye.

Does she, perhaps, bathe in some supernatural life-prolonging flame like Ayesha?  Does she mock at Death and just get reincarnated a lot?  Is she a weird cyborg babe who will live on into the far future and have whiz-bang adventures on other planets and stuff?

One thing's for sure --  she sure has a knack for getting into trouble.  One wonders how she ever finds time to write.

The scary thing is that the dozen and a half cover images I've shown you represent only a portion of the Lisa Mantchev sightings. You're everywhere, ma'am -- nearly always in the thick of things. Consider just these few that didn't make the final cut:

And though I can't swear that this pirate lass is a redhead, I wouldn't be at all surprised ....

So, when shall we start collaborating on "The Redhead on the Covers"? *G*

Perhaps you should write your autobiography, profusely (to say nothing of luridly) illustrated and covering the years up to the time of your birth, after the fashion of Tristram Shandy.

The autobiography is on the list as soon as my life gets as interesting and lurid as the covers you keep posting. *L*

And here I thought she was gonna come after you with her broadaxe.

Lucky.

She's a busy lass.

Hey Steve. Remember me from 18 years ago at Bradley Denton's parties in his backyard in Austin? Tall, thin, looked like David Bowie back then. Always had a cigarette. hee

Read several of your stories since then and really enjoyed them. Cool idea on Lisa's alter-images/egos! :)

Hello, Marshall. Are you still in Austin? I am having a hard time accepting the fact that I've now been away from my adopted hometown for ten and a half years. Can't tell you how homesick I am.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed the stories, whatever they were, and the images of Lisa M., whoever she may actually be.

Sorry you're homesick. I just moved back here last April. If you remember I was a pro musician back then, so gave up my flirtation of writing SF shortly after we met. But you know what they say, Too old to Rock 'n Roll, too young to die.

So I got back into writing SF/F a couple of years ago, started reading the mags and saw a name of a guy I knew and remembered well. You, of course. Since then, I wrote a bunch of stories and made a few small sales, as well as becoming an reviewer at The Fix.

Good to link up with ya again. :)
